Charlotte R. (Owen) Lillard (1833-1862)

According to a genealogy.com post by Janet Wamble, Charlotte R. (Owen) Lillard was the wife of Richard M. Lillard and the mother of Jesse Watson Lillard.  Charlotte was born in Williamson County, TN in 1833 to Jesse Mercer Owen and Sarah (Atkinson) Owen.

Morgan Lillard

Morgan Lillard represents the point at which thing start getting pretty murky for my strand of the Lillard line.  We know that John D. Lillard's father was named Morgan; But it seems that there were at least two Morgan Lillards in the early 19th century and it's not quite clear who was who.  There was a Morgan Lillard who served as a 2nd Corporal with the Rockingham (NC) regiment during the War of 1812.  It is also possible that this was the same Morgan Lillard who served as a Rockingham County constable from 1812-1814.

It is a further possibility that the Morgan Lillard in question was the son of Moses Lillard--traditionally regarded as the beginning patriarch of the family in America.

Ina Mae (Lillard) Young Rickman (1897-1986)

Ina Mae Lillard was the youngest child of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Cassandra Porter.  She was born September 26, 1897 in Water Valley township, Randolph County, AR.  She married Van L. Young on September 15, 1924 in Tyronza.  One child was born to this union--Jack Leslie Young.  Sadly, Van died six years later.  Ina married for the second time in Ravenden Springs, AR on August 18, 1940 to a gentleman named Burl Rickman.  She was employed as the postmistress for Ravenden Springs, where she passed away in February 1986.

Nettie Meadows (Lillard) Davis (1895-1962)

Nettie Meadows Lillard (sometimes called "Nettie Bell" or "Nettie Margurette" was born on February 10, 1895 in Water Valley township, Randolph County, AR to Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Cassandra (Porter) Lillard.  Along with her parents, she moved to Tyronza, AR in 1906. She married Lee Davis in Ravenden Springs in 1916.  No children were born to this union

The couple made their home in Ravenden Springs, where Lee was in the mercantile business for a time with his father and two brothers--Jim and Clark.  After selling the store, Lee and Nettie farmed and raised stock, mules, and horses for sale.  Lee served in World War I after receiving training at Tulane University.  However, he was in theater only three months when the war ended.  Nettie died on October 26, 1962 and is buried in the Jones Cemetary in Randolph County, AR. (Porter genealogy)  An old family genealogy notes that at Nettie's funeral, "A very large crowd attended, and she had so many beautiful flowers.  She will be missed by all who knew her."

In the photo, Nettie is young woman in the back ground seated by herself with the hat.

William David Lillard (1892-1960)

William David Lillard, son of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Lillard, was born on December 15, 1892 in Watervalley, AR and died on January 2, 1960 in Tyronza, AR.  In 1906, young William moved with his parents from Water Valley to Tyronza, AR where he grew up and attended school.  He met and  married Pruda Barger in Tyronza.  Three children were born to this union:  Lora Lillard, Freda May Lillard, and a son who died at birth. (source)

According to records collected by my great aunt, William and Pruda at some point moved to Marked Tree, AR where their daughters grew up and married.  Following the unexpected death of Freda's first husband shortly after marriage, she eventually remarried a Church of God minister named Larry May.  The couple moved to Alabama in 1955.  After Larry suffered a stroke and could no longer work, William and Pruda moved there as well to help Freda.

Luther Carroll Lillard (1888-1924)

Luther Carroll Lillard, son of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Lillard, was born on October 20, 1888 in Randolph County, AR.  He married Beulah Webber, with whom he had six children:  Irene, Alberta, Anna, Paul Monroe, Inez, and Wallace.

Luther's life was tragically cut short when he was shot by a neighbor on December 17, 1924. Luther was living in Tyronza, AR at the time. The following comments on Luther's death come from a handwritten family history produced by one of my great aunts (I believe in the early to mid-1960s):

The shock of [Luther's] death was so very hard for all the family.  The man really had no excuse for shooting him (there was a little dispute over some chickens crossing over into his yard). He was sent to the pen for life, but was paroled after 6 years (with tuberculosis).

John Watson Lillard was the son of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Cassandra Porter.  John Watson was born on May 1, 1882 in Evening Shade, AR.  He married Hazel Cowley around May 1903.

Apparently, John Watson decided to follow in his father's footsteps by siring his own tribe.  He and Hazel had eleven children:  Daisy Marie (Lillard) Dover (b. April 4, 1904); Mable Lenore (Lillard) Johnson (b. March 7, 1906); Jesse Edward Lillard (b. January 3, 1909); Mattie Almeda Lillard (b. October 22, 1910); George Washington Lillard (b. February 22, 1913); John Woodrow Lillard (b. October 15, 1915); Ruby Helen Lillard (b. October 25, 1915); Nettie May Lillard (b. September 14, 1922); Hazel Drucella Lillard (b. March 27, 1924); Katie Elizabeth Lillard (b. August 7, 1926); and Taylor Eugene Lillard (b. March 16, 1929).

John Watson Lillard died in March 26, 1951 in Harrisburg, AR.

Note:  At least one record indicates John Watson and Hazel (Hasel) were actually married in 1904

[He] also was the representative for Water Valley Township at the Democratic Central Committee of Randolph County, Arkansas. -- Randolph County Abstracts 5-13-1893.

Peter Owen Lillard (1877 - 1963)

Peter Owen Lillard (b. November 4, 1877) was the son of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Cassandra Porter.  According to one account, he married Janie Kimball on Christmas day 1898 in Water Valley, AR.

Peter and Janie had two children:  Clarence M. Lillard (b. November 23, 1899; d. August 8, 1949) and Walter Lillard (b. January 6, 1903; d. February 14, 1963)

Richard Lillard (1876 - 1906)

Richard Lillard was the son of Jesse Watson Lillard and Martha "Mattie" Cassandra Porter.  I have found some records that indicate his name was Richard G. Lillard, but others that refer to him as Richard Eugene Lillard. Consequently, I'm leaving it as Richard Lillard for the time being.

He was born on June 11, 1876 in Ash Flat, AR.  Richard married Mollie Besheares in March or April of 1898.  Richard and Mollie had four children:  Roy Lillard (b. 1900), Pansey P. (Lillard) Baker (b. December 10, 1898 in MO; d. February 17, 1981 in Contra Costa, CA), Paul Eugene Lillard (b. April 22, 1902), and Edith Lillard (b. 1904 or 1905).

Richard Lillard died on March 3, 1906 in Water Valley, AR.

Note:  I have found an alternate spelling of Mollie's name: Molly Beshears.
Additional notes of interest:
Molly was a piano teacher.  [Her] father was Squire Henderson "Henry" Beshears. Henry's name was originally "Brashears" but was changed after the Civil War. Molly was probably named after Henry's older sister, Margaret "Molly" Melinda Brashears, who saved his life and the life of his younger brother during the Civil War by smuggling them north to say with relatives until the was was over.
Molllie died on July 10, 1922 in Walnut Ridge, AR

Emely Lillard (1856 - sometime before 1867)

Emely Lillard (b. 1856; Williamson County, TN) was the middle child of Richard M. Lillard and Charlotte R. Owen.  She died sometime before 1867 in Williamson County, TN.

Harriett Drusilla (Lillard) Mullinix (1858 - 1936)

Harriett Drusilla Lillard was born on May 27, 1858 to Richard M. Lillard and Charlotte R. Owen.  She married John Mullinix.  Harriett died on February 6, 1936.

Harriett is a bit difficult to research as I've found spelling variations on two of her given names:  Harriet/Harriett and Drusilla/Drucilla.

Monroe Claiborne Lillard (1843 - ????)

Monroe Claiborne Lillard (b. 1843; Williamson County, TN) was the youngest child of John D. Lillard and Rachel Jarrell.  He married Cynthia A. Biggers either in December 1863 or January 1864 in Williamson County, TN.  Monroe and Cynthia had one child, Sarah Lillard (b. 1864).

Cynthia apparently died in 1868 (perhaps in another childbirth?).  Monroe remarried  on November 2, 1870 in Williamson County, TN to Mary Hay.  At this time, no children are known from this second union.

Monroe seems to have died in 1875, but a record I found indicates a burial in 1934.  Not knowing my TN geography especially well, I wonder whether his grave might not have been moved due to flooding from the TVA project.

Marian Lillard (1841 - ????)

Marian Lillard (b. 1841) was the son of John D. Lillard and Rachel Jarrell.  Regrettably, I have not been able to find out any further information.

Virginia Lillard (b. 1839) was another daughter of John D. Lillard and Rachel Jarrell.  She married William Mincey.

Nancy Ellen (Lillard) Gillespie (1837 - 1861)

Lillard and Rachel (Jarrell) Lillard.  Sara married Samuel Green Morton on September 24, 1844.  Sara and Samuel had one child, John Abner Morton (born 1848 in Marshall, MS).  She died on February 9, 1914.

Jesse Adolph Lillard (1915 - 1983)

Jesse Adolph Lillard was born on October 20, 1915 and died on December 25, 1983.  He was the son of James Monroe Lillard and Fannie Magnolia (Weber) Lillard.  Jesse Adolph married Wilma Stegall with whom he had two sons:  James "Jim" Stegall Lillard and David Randolph "Randy" Lillard. He was my grandfather.

James Monroe Lillard (1884-1928)

James Monroe Lillard was born on August 5, 1884 to Jesse Watson and Mattie Lillard.  He married Fannie Magnolia Weber, with whom he had five children:  Jesse Adolph Lillard, Morris Lillard, James Lillard, Lucille Lillard and Virginia Lillard.  James Monroe Lillard died on November 26, 1928.  He was my great grandfather.

Jesse Watson Lillard (1854-1941)

pic from the Tyronza, AR cemetary.  retrieved from www.findagrave.com
Jesse Watson Lillard was born on April 28, 1854 in Williamson County, TN.  According to a genealogy posting by Janet Wamble, Jesse Watson was the was the son of Richard M. Lillard and Charlotte R. Lillard, Luther Carroll Lillard, William David Lillard, Nettie Meadows (Lillard) Davis, and Ina Mae (Lillard) Young Rickman. According to one genealogical account, it seems that Jesse Watson and Mattie moved around a bit.  It lists their residence in 1880 as Richwoods, Sharp County, AR...by 1910 he was in Tyronza in Poinsett County, AR...and he died on January 20, 1941 in Ravenden Springs, Randolph County, AR.  He was my great-great grandfather.

John D. Lillard (c. 1803 - 1864)

John D. Lillard (born c. 1803 in Rockingham County, NC; died 1864 in Williamson County, TN) was the son of Morgan Lillard and either Abbie (Howard) Lillard or perhaps Rebecca Jane (Hutchison) Lillard.  He married Rachel Jarrell on February 21, 1828 in Rockingham County, NC..  John and Rachel had six children:  Richard M. Lillard, Sarah Elizabeth (Lillard) Morton, Virginia (Lillard) Mincey, Nancy Ellen (Lillard) Gillespie, Marian Lillard, and Monroe Claiborne Lillard.  in He was my great-great-great-great grandfather. John D. Lillard died in 1864.

Unfortunately, he was also one of those ancestors you can't be proud of.  The following account was found on a genealogical record of Suddath and Freeman ancestors:

John D. Lillard moved to Williamson Co., TN about 1830. The lives of John D. Lillard and Rachel (Jarrell) Lillard both ended tragically. She was killed by her husband and he died during his capture. The story goes that John D. Lillard had a girl friend in Marshall County and one day before setting out to see her, he threw his wife Rachel into the well at their home and threw numerous rocks on top of her. John D. Lillard then left for Marshall County, but some person passing by on the road near the Lillard home heard Rachel's weak cries for help from the bottom of the well and removed her. She told them what John D. Lillard had done. A group of citizens set out to catch John D. Lillard. Tradition is that Mr. Lillard was overtaken and apprehended at a bridge over the Duck River near present day Henry Horton State Park. One of his captors, Greene Smithson, made John D. Lillard climb the side rail of the bridge. When Lillard was standing on top of the rail, the captor shot Lillard who fell to his death in the river below. Lillard's killer then left to avoid a murder charge himself, never again to return to Williamson County. A Coroner's Jury for Williamson County was empaneled to conduct an inquest into the death of Rachel (Jarrett) Lillard. The following is their report:

State of Tennessee
County of Williamson

Inquisition held at John D. Lillards in the County and State aforesaid on the ___ December 1864, before William N. Smith, J.P. acting coroner of said County upon the body of Mrs. Rachel Lillard found lying in the well not quite dead and believed by the Jury from all evidence and circumstances that she was pushed in the well by her husband, John D. Lillard and that he threw rocks on her and broke her skull and caused her death. In testimony whereof, the said Jurors have hereunto set their hands the day and date above.

Richard M. Lillard (1830 - 1876)

Richard M. Lillard from http://www.tngenweb.org/williamson/bios/family/lillardrich.htm
Richard M. Lillard was the son of John D. Lillard and Rachel (Jarrell) Lillard.  Richard M. Lillard was born in 1830 in Williamson County, Tennessee.  He married Charlotte R. Owen on December 31, 1851.  Richard and Charlotte had three children:  Jesse Watson Lillard, Harriet Drusilla Lillard, and Emely Lillard.  He died April 15, 1876.  He was my great-great-great grandfather.
